Greed
This is the way corporate America treats its employees. Shamefull!
Unrealistic Employees
If you want lifetime employment, get a job with the MN Dept of Motor Vehicles. Metro Media is barely viable and Petters is its only chance at solvency. Learn economics, people.
Theft
The entire enterprise is the work the employees do. Stealing the labor of the employees should be considered a criminal act just like any other theft. If you cann't afford the labor you shouldn't even show up.
Economics
Simple Economics says you work, you get paid. Since they didn't get paid, they have every right to seek what is rightfully owed them.
Paying the debts of others
Let's say you buy a house. You close, and the owner had not paid the electric bill for the three prior months. Is that your responsibility or the responsibility of the previous owner? Your anger should be directed at the previous owners of the Group, not at Petters.
Before you consider buying a polaroid tv, which is owned by Petters, google 'polaroid complaints'. You will change your mind about buying one of these pieces of junk.
Typical move
Mr. Unrealistic only knows enough to be danagerous. Petters Group was an investor in the old company too. They have a liability and duty to the former employees. They left some employees high and dry when in fact they were part of the old company and owe them. They used a shell game to duck out of their liability and responsibility.
A good story
Those people probably worked thru their vacations to try and help a struggling company, and deserve to be compensated. Nice that Petters was called out for their behavior. My guess is other companies might think twice before developing a similar "FAQ".
He probably does not have to pay, but it's the right thing to do....
When your name is on the door of your company, you are obliged to represent that company with integrity and treat people with respect. If each person was owed $2800, for example, x 50 people, it's $140,000.....do the right thing and pay the workers.
Get over it
Here we go again, what do you people not understand about a work at will state? Companies do not have to pay you for accrued vacation. You do not like it, go work someplace else. Also, if you are not getting back pay, then why are you staying? How can you accrue since July 1, $2800.00 in back pay? That is about $1,000.00 a week in back pay, what is your rate of pay? Even at time and a half, that is still an incredible amount of hours put in. Debts and fund balances are all part of a negotiation that none of you have knowledge of. Chances are, the former company owes those debts and they chose not to pay them, period end of story. While Petters may have owned a stake in the former company, they did not lay these people off and are only responsible for the employees they took on day one, nothing more, nothing less.
