Tell your kid to stand!
If it's a school rule and he "doesn't have an answer" as to why he didn't stand - then he clearly is just being obstinate. I can't believe a parent would support their kid in this situation!!!
I can believe it Carter. If the child doesn't want forced socialism shoved down his throat then why should he? Is standing to idolize a flag better than real patriotism? I think not. Was he doing anything wrong other than being disobedient to an archaic rule set forth by those that don't know that patriotism and pride of one's country are more than waving at a flag and lighting off fireworks once a year? If you want to talk about patriotism you can't just defend the flag you have to defend each citizen's right to literally and figuratively burn it in effigy.
Why do they have to stand?
Don't get me wrong, I think every american should stand for the pledge but why make them? I am tired of everyone making people do something because they want them to. If I was the parent and my kids didn't stand I would take there side and fight it. I would also look into just keeping them home for that day and tell the school where to go.
Respect!
Even if you do not like the Pledge of Allegiance for what ever reason. You should respect others who care and stand! The lack of respect is the main part of our trouble in this rough times.
More Troubling
It is anyones right to sit or stand for the pledge (if it was a school rule and they had no reason they should've stood). The larger question is what parent thinkls its OK to texting their kids during a school day?
Norwegian Fights
Lol Dahls versus Olsons OH YA BETCHA THIS WILL BE ON GARRISON KEILLOR!
If the parent objects to the district's rule of standing for the Pledge, then she should go to the school board and request that the rule be removed (unless there's a state law I am unaware of). Rules are the rules, and just complaining about them won't get you very far.
Out of respect for our country..
Its really not that hard to stand up and show some respect- not merely for the flag, but for the values that the flag represents: liberty, justice, and truth. Yes, this is a free country, but that also means that these families are free to leave if they cannot respect our nation.
Everyone should stand for the flag pledge
We are so lucky to live in this country and we should all honor our flag. Shame on those parents that always stick up for their kids, against the rules of their school, the law, etc. That's why we have so many kids in trouble, there is no respect for anything now days.
Sitting should be allowed
According to a Supreme Court ruling back during WWII, saying the Pledge cannot be forced. Also, that sitting and not standing during the Pledge is a type of free speech. And as for rules, yeah, the schools need to follow Supreme Court rulings too. (and before anybody jumps on me, I'd stand and say the Pledge and just merely omit to words that were added in the 50's). By the way, does anybody realize that Francis Belamy, the author of the Pledge was a communist?
