Clue 4: Wampum shell beads
Special beads, called wampum shell beads, were found at what is believed
to be Hole-in-the-Day's cabin. They were made in Albany, N.Y., from New
England clam shells and were used by American Indians as money. Doug Birk
was touring the Smithsonian Institution, a museum in Washington, D.C., when
he saw the same kind of beads on display. The information card said that
they had belonged to Chief Hole-in-the-Day from Minnesota. Unfortunately,
the Smithsonian lost its old notes on where it got its beads.
