As the the oldest surviving theater in Minneapolis, the Shubert boasts a rich history. It was built in 1910 by the Shubert brothers, who were national theater impresarios. Between 1934 and 1956, when it was called the Alvin, the venue was known for its vaudeville shows. In this 1957 photo, the theater was celebrating a reopening under yet a new name -- the Academy. It was closed in 1983. In early 1998, the Shubert was moved to 528 Hennepin Av., a quarter-mile away.
