Star Tribune can produce your banner ad. In addition to standard banner ads, we can also create several Rich Media formats. Consult with your sales representative or check our rate card for pricing. Ads are produced to the specs below.



 + Basic Banner Ad
1. We produce banners for any of the formats listed in our technical specs.
2. Banners may be static or animated. Animation may loop up to 3 times.
3. All banners with a white background must have a border of at least 1 pixel.
4. When sending artwork to be used by Star Tribune staff to build your banner, the following graphic formats are supported: jpeg, gif, psd, tiff, eps, pdf, png, pict, bmp.
5. The Star Tribune reserves the right to approve or decline a basic media ad campaign if delivery of site content or user experience is compromised. All ad materials must be compliant with Star Tribune ad acceptability standards and guidelines http://startribunecompany.com/119.

 + Auto Expanding Leaderboard Ad
1. Description: As the name suggests, Auto Expanding Leaderboard ads loads with a 5 second "teaser" panel that draws attention to the banner. It also may contain panels that expand to reveal a more detailed presentation, just like the expanding ad (below). View a sample ad here.
2. Availability: They may run on section fronts and articles; they may not run on the homepage or in newsletters.
3. Features:
-Behavior: A panel automatically appears for 5 seconds. The remaining panels expand downward on mouse over.
-Frequency Capping: StarTribune.com caps Auto Expanding Ads and Floating Ads so that users may see only one per session.
-Panels: Include up to 3 tabbed expanded panels.
-Reporting: Receive a detailed banner performance report. Includes how many times the banner was shown and clicked, and how many times a user expanded and clicked a panel.
4. Technical Specs:
-Size: Expands from 728 x 90 to 728 x 290 pixels. Expanded panels are 728 x 200 pixels. Auto expandingpanel is 728 x 290.
-File Size Limit: File size can be up to 50k per panel, initial load must be under 39k.
-Buttons: All Expanding Leaderboards will contain a "show more" button in the Leaderboard.
-Close button: Auto expanding panel must contain a close button in the bottom right corner.

 + Expanding Leaderboard Ad
1. Description: As the name suggests, Expanding Leaderboard ads expand to reveal a more detailed presentation. View a sample ad here.
2. Availability: They may run on section fronts and articles; they may not run on the homepage or in newsletters.
3. Features:
-Behavior: Expands downward on mouse over. Ad may not auto expand.

-Size: Expands from 300 x 250 to 500 x 300 pixels. Expanded panel is 500 x 300 pixels.
-File Size Limit: File size can be up to 50k per panel, initial load must be under 39k.
-Buttons: All Expanding Big ads will contain a "show more" button in the initial banner.

 + Expanding Flag Ad
1. Description: As the name suggests, Expanding Flag ads expand to reveal a more detailed presentation. View a sample ad here.
2. Availability: They may run on section fronts and on our homepage; they do not run in articles.
3. Features:
-Behavior: Expands downward on mouse click. Ad may not auto expand.
-Panels: Expands to show an 800 x 800 panel.
-Reporting: Receive a detailed banner performance report. Includes how many times the banner was shown and clicked, and how many times a user expanded and clicked the panel.
4. Technical Specs:
-Size: Expands from a 146 x 60 to 800 x 800 pixels.
-File Size Limit: File size can be up to 200k for entire ad, initial load must be under 39k.
-Buttons: Expanded panel will contain a close button, with an "x" and the word "close."

 + Floating Banner Ad
1. Description: Floating ads capture a user's attention by loading in front of StarTribune.com content and remaining for 10 seconds before resolving into a standard ad position. View a sample here.
2. Availability: Floating ads may run on most section fronts; they may not run on our homepage, Cars section fronts, or Homes section fronts. They do not run in articles
3. Technical Specs:
-Positioning: Floating Ads must not appear over our masthead, navigation or other ads.
-Frequency Capping: StarTribune.com caps Auto Expanding Ads and Floating Ads so that users may see only one per session.
-Size: Floating ads may be up to 500 x 500 pixels and must be under 80k.
-Duration: Animation may run up to 10 seconds.
-Reminder: After the animation concludes, Floating Ads resolve into a standard StarTribune.com ad position.
-Audio: All audio must be user-initiated by mouse click. If the banner includes audio, it must include a mute button and load with sound turned off.
-Close button: All floating ads must have a close button. It should be positioned in the top, right corner of the floating image. The word "close" should be included as part of the button. The standard "X" symbol should be included.
-Click-through area: The click thru area should be the size of the "showed" part of the floater, and not the stage.

 + Slideshow Banner Ad
1. Description: Slideshow banners allow you to showcase up to eight products or offers. The banner rotates through. View a sample ad here.
2. Features:
- Before slideshow loads, the banner will animate to catch viewers' attention.
- Banner rotates through all photos, viewers can toggle to view a specific image.
- Viewers can link to your Web site by clicking on any of the product links.
- Reporting allows you to track how often viewers interact with the banner.
- Each non-animated image frame/photo can contain 1 link.
3. Availability: These ads appear in the Big Ad position on section fronts and articles.
4. Technical Specs:
-Ad Unit Size: 300 x 250 pixels.
-Slide Size: 170 x 160 pixels.
-File size limit: Up to 39k.
-Duration: Approximately 3 seconds for each non-animated image frame/photo; up to 5 images allowed.
-Completion: The ad ends with last or first 300 x 250 pixel image displayed.

 + Sliding Billboard (Big ad reminder)
1. Description: As the name suggests, Expanding Big ads expand to reveal a more detailed presentation. View a sample ad here.
2. Availability: They only run on the homepage.
3. Features:
-Behavior: Billboard expands all content downward, then retracts after 5 seconds. Big ad expands to the left on mouse over. Big ad may not auto expand.
-Reporting: Receive a detailed banner performance report. Includes how many times the banner was shown and clicked, and how many times a user expanded and clicked the panel.
4. Technical Specs:
-Size: Slider: 728-759 x 300. Big: Expands from 300 x 250 to either 500 x 300 or 759 x 300 pixels. Expanded panel is 500 x 300 or 759 x 300 pixels.
-File Size Limit: File size can be up to 50k per panel, initial big ad load must be under 39k.
-Buttons: All Expanding Big ads will contain a "show more" button in the initial banner.

 + Video Banner Ad
1. Description: Video banner ads extend the reach of your television commercial by presenting it in a banner unit. View a sample ad here.
2. Availability: They may run in any Big Ad position on section fronts and articles; they may not run on our homepage.
3. Features:
-Video is delivered through a standard 300 x 250 pixel video player.
-Options: Ad is customizable to contain advertiser logo or additional click-thru.
-Reporting: Receive a report detailing how many times the ad was shown, audio was accessed, the video was stopped, started, or replayed, and how many times the ad was clicked.
4. Commercial Materials: The advertiser must supply the video presentation. Star Tribune will convert the presentation into a video ad provided that:
- It is no longer than 30 seconds.
- Does not require editing.
- Is not on a Beta tape.
5. Technical Specs: Video ad file size not to exceed 1mb.
-Duration: Up to 30 seconds of video which a user can replay or pause on click.
-Audio: All audio will be user-initiated by mouse click and, the ad will include a mute button.
-Requirements: URL click-thru, and video file in digital format (.wmv, .mov, mepg, .dvi).
-Completion: Video Ads must end with a static 300 x 250 image/offer.

 + Wallpaper Ad
1. Description: Wallpaper ads are a premium branding product. They include an advertiser logo and a solid color background. View a sample ad here.
2. Availablity: They may run on our homepage and section fronts.
3. Logo: The advertiser must float a logo in the wallpaper. It is a logo more than it is a graphic. It:
- Should identify the advertiser.
- May include a tag line.
- May not introduce additional graphics. This is not a place to show product or other advertising creative elements.
- May not be animated.
- The file size for the logo may not exceed 20k
- The pixel dimensions should not exceed 100 x 200 pixels.
4. Background Color: Wallpaper must use a solid background color, that is:
- Not white (or subtle shade of white.)
- Not in the same family as our brand or navigation colors.
- Not a pattern. For example, the homepage may not be striped or textured.
5. Linking: Wallpaper ads do not link to an advertiser's Web site
6. Scripting: Wallpaper creative may not deliver any sort of scripting (for example, they may not include Java script.)
7. Tracking: If the advertiser wishes to track the number of wallpaper ads that were delivered, they may provided a 1 x 1 tracking graphic.
