He was an All-American halfback with the University of Minnesota is 1933 and 1934. He was known as a "triple-threat" back because he did most of the passing, kicking, and running. He was captain of their 1934 national championship team.
He played in the East-West All-Star game and the College All-Star game in 1935.
He was named the 1934 Big Ten's Most Valuable Player.
He was voted into the Sports Illustrated Silver Anniversary All-American team in 1959.
He is a member of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.
