Patti Smith (and Tony Glover), Walker Art Center, 1972

Photographer Tom Berthiaume: "Patti was reading her poetry at the Walker Auditorium, a very New York City beat-style event, accompanying herself occasionally with a toy piano, Tony Glover adding trenchant harmonica blasts for emphasis. I had no idea who she was, but the ever-prescient [Walker performing arts curator] Sue Weil knew she was more than just another skinny girl dressed in black from alphabet city. Right again."
