"The Army Reserve unit deployment ceremony was one of the most moving events I've ever covered. It brought the war home for me, personally, to see the soldiers saying goodbye to their husbands, wives, children, mothers and fathers. Mike Baier said farewill to his girlfriend, Jenna Hardy. He expected to miss the birth of his child, but he injured his back and was home for the arrival of their son Dec. 4. He will rejoin his unit in Iraq. I made the photograph with a toy camera for a series on election issues. I enjoy using the Holga as an exercise in simplicity and an antidote to the digital cameras I use in the majority of my work." |
